Low light shooting problems

    I have a Nikon D50 with a Sigma 2.8 lense. I was shooting indoors the other night at a live taping of a band I am very fond of and I noticed folks with point and shoot cameras got great images without a flash, I was unable to get anything without a flash but I suspect I was doing something wrong, anyone have any ideas?
