Photoshop can handle that without breaking a sweat.

I checked with OnOne. None of their products are compatible with smart
objects. And they are not planning such compatibility at present. :-(

the workaround is to flatten the image and convert it to a regular image.

Not quite good information from whoever you checked with.
In that case there is no need to go from LR5 to PS/CC to use Perfect
Resize. However, they need to read their own comparison chart where
they state that PPS 8 Premium Edition has the capability to work with
SO as Smart filters, that is true even with PPS6.

What they actually say is Perfect Resize is not usable on layers, SO,
or otherwise, or even with Perfect Layers in LR5. Most of the other
modules can be opened in PS as an SO and then worked on as a Smart
Filter. If you want to retain the layers, but still use Perfect Resize
It would be simple enough to go to the History Panel and click on the
"Create new Document from current state". On the new document merge the
layers (or if SO flatten) then use Perfect Resize.

As I think i said, i am first learning LR & SO. Pree CC I would open an
image in Bridge, do many adjustments in ACR, the finalize in PS6,
including a resize. I started playing with SO, just to see if I can gain
anything from it's use. Since OnOne won't work in SO, I have to rethink
my workflow, or stop using it, except as the final step.

I did pretty much the same until LR4 came along
Just to be clear, regardless of what you were told, it is only OnOne
Perfect Resize which will not work with layers or with SOs as a Smart
Filter (because Perfect Resize is not a filter and needs to apply its
resizing to a single background where all the adjustment layers and/or
SOs have been merged and/or flattened.

OnOne Perfect Effects, Enhance, B&W, Portrait, & Mask will all work
with an SO as a Smart Filter. Perfect will not.

I have another question regarding your need for Perfect Resize; What
sizes do you need to enlarge to, given the quite large basic image
    provided by your D800?
That is unless you are trying to bring some of the extreme crops you
make up to presentation size that is. As I have said before, the new
"Image Size" operation in PS/CC is a great improvement over the
previous versions and is worth visiting.

....er that was meant to be "Perfect Resize will not'.

My penchant for extreme cropping wasa a strong motivation in getting the
D800. I have done extreme cropping when making color prints from slides.
(Then I called it "image mining.")
