lumix fz8

hey there..
uhm i was wondering if anyone here could help me out a bit..
i got a fz8 for my bday which is awesome cause i really wanna learn photography lol and they say its a good one for begginers... lol i hope so
but anyway
i took a couple pictures and when i put them on my computer theyre like..
really grainy
and really big so im thinking maybe its a format stuff?
or is the picture quality of that camera really that low?
