    Haven't a clue what I'm doing wrong........

    Canon Digital Rebel XT
    28-135 IS USM (3.5-5.6) "supposedly"
    70-300 IS USM (4-5.6) "yes"

I can NOT get my 28-135 down to 3.5 F-stop; the lowest number I can go
    is 5.6....doesn't matter if I'm at 28 or 135. I would assume that 28
would get me the 3.5 stop; doesn't matter if it is on "Auto" or "M"
    I't only stays on 5.6.
When I do the exact same thing with my other lense 70-300; at 70 I can
get it down to 4.0 when I move it to 300 it (as expected) goes to 5.6.

    thanks

Check for crud on the contacts--if that doesn't help then the 28-135
probably needs to go in for repairs.

Does zooming out to infinity help?
Some macro lenses do that at close focus.
