I sort of become the video editor of a group of volunteer videographers. I
want to buy a cheap miniDV cam to play the miniDV tapes (to capture into PC)
that I get from everyone instead of wearing out my trv900 doing this.

The cheapest miniDV camcorder I found is a samsung sc-d353 selling for $215
at b and h. Does anyone see any problem to this approach?

A far better idea than to wear out your TRV900, thats for sure.

No problem at all. I use a Sony TRV20 for getting data too and from my
computer, to spare my VX2000. It works great.

  4. I don't know if you have a Big Lots near you, but I saw a Samsung miniDV
    there for $199

You might want to see if you can find somebody's camcorder
with a bad camera section, but good tape transport. eBay?
