You are correct, it is not the same (hence my use of "modified FTM").
You do have to use the AF/MF button to change modes before the AF
locks (Once it locks the clutche releases automatically and you can
touch up focus without pressing a button.) But as I recall, FTM is
only possible with some Canon lenses (not sure if its all USM or just
ring USM), and I remember reading that USM FTM has some limitations
(I've never used a Canon lens with USM so I don't know for sure).
That is one of the nice things about the Maxxum 7. The AF/MF button
and DMF work with all lenses, which let me buy some classic Minolta
lenses very inexpensively (first generation Minolta 100mm f/2.8 macro
for $165) and still have those features.

Granted. But it would be nicer if both Minolta and Canon et al made all their
lenses have SSM/USM/etc. that allowed true full time focus at _anytime_
    (before/during/after focusing), used 100mm/2.8 macro/etc. bargains, excepted,
    of course ;-).

Mostly lack of a DSLR. The 6 Mp 1.5x crop-factor announced for this fall
might fit the bill, or it might not. So far Konica- Minolta has not shown
that it has a handle on digital noise reduction. Samples on dpreview.com
show the D7/A1/A2 to have far more noise, especially at higher ISOs, than
    comparable Canon models.

A secondary problem is that lack of lens choice. I'd like to own a 24-105
but it takes 62 filters, and Minolta doesn't make any longer lens (zoom or
non-zoom) with matching filters. So I stay with my 24-50/4 and 70-210/4.
Actually I'm happy with them, especially considering price paid.

In the Canon line, a 300D with 18-55 matches filters with a 70-300 DO IS,
announced but apparently not yet available.

Do you use many different types of filters often? It would seem to me that
filter thread sizes should be a lot further down on the list (or near the end
of the list) as to why one would switch from one brand to the other, especially
with money already tied up in your present Minolta gear. The added built-in IS
(AS) of the Digital Maxxum 7 would make all of your lenses into IS/AS lenses.
This, to me, would seem to far outweigh other miniscule advantages such as
filter size. For wider angle coverage you might consider the new Tamron
17-35/2.8 or the like as the Minolta 17-35/2.8 is very expensive. Also, it
wouldn't surprise me if Minolta came out with its digital only format lenses
with wider wide angles equivalent to or better than the wide angle coverage of
Canon's 18-55 to compensate for the 1.5x (or whatever it will be) crop factor
    of the Digital Maxxum 7.

  5. Granted. But it would be nicer if both Minolta and Canon et al made all
    I agree.
    What was the question?
