I recently acquired a minolta dimage 7i digital camera and attempted to
use a ~2 year old 256MB sandisk SDCFB compact flash card in it. But the
camera refuses to recognize it after i slide it in the slot. And i know
the flash card is functional because it's been performing flawlessly for
the past couple years in another kodak camera that i own.

The lexar 16MB "8x" compact flash card that was included with the camera
works fine. But being a 5+ mexapixel camera, i'm only able to shoot
around 10 pictures at a time which severly limits the usefullness of the

I've seen other users here mention that the dimage 7i is very touchy
about slow access speed compact flash cards. Are there any other issues
i should watch for when shopping for memory for this camera? And has
anyone sucessfully used a brand of compact flash other than lexar or
    sandisk in this camera?

as soon as i turn the selector dial to the playback mode, the camera
says "cannot use card" and i'm not permitted to access the menu to
    format the card.

    Another posibility:

Use FDISK to repartition the card. Worked for me after trying Card Wiper
which erased the card's partition. Maybe other cameras can handle a card
with no partiton, but Minolta can't. I had to use a computer with Windows
    98 to get FDISK.

    Hi All.
    I have a 7i & use a Jessop's own brand (actually a toshiba card) 256mb card.
It does work, except when I switch the camera straight to playback mode,
`the unable to use card' message appears. If i switch the camera to record
mode from the off position, wait until the camera has booted up, then
switch it to playback mode, then the card works. I do not know if this is a
card error, or a compatibility problem. It does work though.
    Hope this helps.
