I was looking for a Maxxum 7 50mm lens and would like opinions on the
best choices out there. I assume there F1.7 is fair because it is so
cheap at $30-45 on Ebay The F1.4 is around $100-150 on Ebay
Are any of the aftermarket lenses worth recommending ? Vivitar,
    Tamaron etc.
F1.4 is my priority choice for low light shooting.
    appreciate any replies

Just read your question again and then fearlessly get the Maxxum
f/1.4 .. stipulate rear element in immaculate condition.

    f/1.7 is nifty too.

  3. They are both good lenses. The 1.7 is cheaper because most people will
always think the 1.4 is better because it originally cost more. It is
faster, not by much, but I would not say better, just different.

The 50 1.7 is a very sharp and contrasty lens. I use mine for
astrophotography which places great demands on a lens as stars will show up
any spherical abberation towards the edge of the field. In this respect my
50/1.7 AF is visibly better wide open than an earlier MF Rokkor 50/1.4 which
for other purposes is also an excellent lens.

There really is such a thing as a bargain!

I got both. Both are good.
Get the f1.7 version first. It is good enough.

I posted a similar requirement for Maxxum 5 and concluded that the
    following are good budget buys:
    - 50mm f/1.7
    - 28-85/105mm
    - 70-210mm f4

Take a look at www.keh.com. They have these in excellent condition at
    great prices.
