Minolta shutter capacitor

    Can anyone offer advice on the replacement of this?

    Reading some earlier posts I understand that the problem I have, a frozen
    shutter with the camera powering off when I press the shutter release, could
    well be due to a faulty capacitor

    I've removed the baseplate on my x-300 and just wanted to verify that what
    I'm looking at is in fact the offending item.

    I have a picture of the circuit board but nowhere to post it , perhaps
    anyone willing to help might be interested to look. I beleive what I'm
    looking at is a 150 mfd tantalum bead, but I'm no expert. It's about the
    size of a dried split pea, only blue rather than green.

    I'm willing to have a go at this myself, but don't know how to identify the
    polarity which as I understand it is rather important.

  2. Sounds like a Diped Tantalum cap. Should be easy to find, in a junk box or even in a disposable
    camera that has a flash. Usually they mark the (+) lead on the case with either a line or +++
    markings. But they could also mark the negative.
    In either case, do find the correct polarity. Tantalums like to heatup and go Bang when reversed.

    Tantalums are used for their high capacitance density in a small volume .
    There are sub mini electrolytic capacitors that may fit physically and
    electrically. Tantalum capacitors are noted for their low leakage as
    compared to electrolytic. If the circuit is sensitive to leakage, the
    substitution may fail, but I'd bet the electrolytic will work just fine if
    it fits in the space.

    Tantalums are polarized and thus marked. Given the 150uf rating, I'd say you
    are correct in stating that it is a tantalum cap.

    If it is tantalum, and you get it backwards, you'll know. They act just
    like a match head that has just been struck. (I think you'll find a band at
    one end to indicate polarity.)

    I think a 7mm electrolytic might well fit. 220uf is the nearest I can find
    in a local store, they have no tantalum greater than 100uf. It's worth a try
    and won't cost much.

    3 to 16. Go to their website and see if they have something that looks

    That sounds a lot better than the US component site where the handling
    charge was $5 and shipping from $18 upwards!
