"Japanese product"? Vivitar is an American marketing company that
contracts with Asian factories to build stuff with their name. The FL-50
and 285 are likely made side-by-side in the same factory.

Probably now, but my 283 was made in Japan.

Last time I looked, Japan was in Asia, too. I'll bet if you opened that
flash you would find parts from several countries. They were just
assembled by the lowest bidder, which in your case happened to be
    Japanese.

It is many years since Vivitar was American. The American company
went bust a long time ago. The rights to the Vivitar brand name and
some of the Vivitar products were purchased by Cosina of Japan.

All Vivitar products are now manufactured by Cosina. Most are merely
poor quality Cosina products with the Vivitar brand name on them,
although the 283/285 flash guns appear to be similar to the original
    Vivitar products.
