N80 Zoom Lens Recommendation

Discussion in '35mm Cameras' started by Peter Gibbons, Nov 5, 2003.

  1. I own a Nikon N80 and currently have a 28-80mm zoom lens. I'm looking
to get another zoom lens around 300mm for shooting sports
(specifically daytime football games), airshows, etc.

My budget is roughly $400-$500 - can anyone recommend a decent quality
zoom lens for this price? Are mirrored lenses worth looking into at
    all?

Do not get a mirror lens for this camera: they are hard to focus under any
    circumstances.
In my humble opinion there is not much difference between third party and
Nikon lenses in this price range and focal length. So I would save some
money and look into Sigma/Tamron et al. Just avoid that 28-300 doorstop.

  4. I'd pass on a mirror lens, even if you could find one which would
    meter with an N80.

If you want to buy a new lens for this purpose, at that price range
you'll be looking at second-tier lenses like the Nikon 70~300 ED
    (~$275), Tokina 80~400 (~380) or Sigma 135~400 (~$500). I own the
Nikkor and have used the Tokina; both are somewhat soft at the long
    end.

Used, that price range will cover a decent copy of the older model
    300mm f4 ED-IF, which ain't a zoom but is a top-quality hunk of glass.
