Near crisis with the R2880

My Epson R2880 stopped feeding paper today and nothing I did persuaded
it to cooperate. So I called customer support and they put me through
some fruitless button pushing manipulations. They told me that they
could do no more on the phone, and gave me the numbers for two Service
centers out here in California. One in Santa Cruz and one in Oxnard. If
any out of warranty repairs were bid at a silly level, they told me
they would be able to replace the R2880 for the "special Loyalty"
    replacement program price of $486.

Santa Cruz being the closer service center I called there first and
explained my problem. Very knowledgable Dave told me that replacement
of the feed unit (labor inc.) would run about $220. However, he advised
that before taking the 2 hour drive to Santa Cruz, I should dampen a
cloth and wipe down the rubber paper feed roller. Amazingly that was
all it took. The R2880 is back up and running and producing prints as
    intended.

All I can say is for a guy to hand hold me through a problem to deny
himself charging me for a repair, is going to get him my enthusiastic
endorsement in the future. That includes any recommendations for folks
in this area with printer issues that need fixing. it is always a good
day when somebody with knowledge and experience can save you some $$$
and has the integrity not to rob you.

Damn good thing too, as I had just spent $120 on a bunch of ink carts!!

My experience with that shop in Santa Cruz is different. I called there
to inquire about repair of my R3000. Dave wasn't there so they took my
number. He never returned my call. I'm glad you had better luck.

Yup! The guy who answered the phone didn't have a clue ( I think that
is all he does, answer the phone and watch the counter) and he passed
me on to Dave as soon as he understood he was going to be no help at
    all.
Dave on the other hand, immediately grasped the problem and indicated
two possible repair procedures topping out at the feed unit replacement
@ $220, but he was insistent that the feed roller cleaning should be
tried before all of the more expensive options. That simple fix did the
trick, and i am thankful for his help.

It would also have meant a drive up from my place at Lake Nacimiento,
and a wrestling match with that traffic on Hwy I from Aptos to Santa
    Cruz.

sounds like they have a pretty smart business person, as well as a smart
    technician.
That's all all too rare combination.
We have a place here that sell and repairs cameras. without going into
details, Koh's camera has earned my respect for competency and honesty.
I try to do business with them as much as possible.
Unfortunately, they do not carry the higher end of Nikon lenses.

Well, sure, but you have to regard any such mandatory drive as a potential
photo op. No telling what you might have encountered during the trip. Even a
traffic jam can be photogenic under the right circumstances. :^)

That photo op is always there on that part of the Central Coast. When
taking a purpose filled drive North you are pretty much on 101 through
the Salinas Valley, then with the artichoke fields of Castroville to
the coast at Moss Landing. However, once you get beyond Watsonville it
is obvious that the area has become a dormitory for the Bay
Area/Silicon Valley together with the mind numbing traffic on Hwy 1 to
    go with that.

With time on a return drive I would consider the drive on Hwy 1 from
Monterey through Big Sur. That is always worthwhile, and is one of my
regular drives with a few variations.
It is a well trodden path for me, and there are few surprises on that
route for me, that includes local artist John Cerney's giant art work.

I would prefer to forego the traffic.
