How can I convert my dad's old photographic B & W negatives into
positives using my scanner and some digital software program with my
    Mac?

    IN Photoshop
    Scan> Invert>Adjust Levels> Adjust resolution> Sharpen> Save.

  3. Which scanner are you using? My Epson 450 Photo does it automatically at the
    scanning stage.

If you don't have a slide and Negative Scanner, you have to take your negatives
to a good photoshop that does scan Slide & Negs.

They will put your scanned negs or slides on a CD or Zip Disk for a price.

Usually about $5.00 a scan. The Higher the Resolution the more money they
want. The Leeches that they are.

Scanning negs and slides on a bed scanner doesn't produce quality images that
    are
good enough to work with or print. God knows I have tried. Because bed
    scanners
use a reflected light system to scan, you don't have a light source on the
    opposite side
of the scanning sensor to transmit light through the Slide or Neg to the Scan
    Sensor.

Even if you do find away to put a light source on the opposite side of the Scan
    Sensor,
the light on the same side of the sensor must be turned off or you will get
    light bouncing
off of the surface of the slide or negative back into the same side of the Scan
    Sensor.
    That would be counter productive.

The Scanner Co's. should offer a scanner system where you have two light
    sources; one on
the under-side for Standard reflected scanning and one on the top side for
    Slide/Negs for
transmitted Scans that is controlled with a switch or software control system.

    One Scanner to do both.
