Nikon 17-35 f2.8 makes whining noise...

Discussion in 'Nikon' started by Call me Ishmael, Sep 14, 2005.

  1. Anybody come across this before. The lens is quiet enough on a short
adjustment of the AF, but if focussing from, say, close up to infinity
then I can hear a nasty whine. It's especially pronounced when hunting
for focus and the motor is changing direction. Only had it a month,
and didn't notice it at first, but having not used it for a while, the
noise is now there and wouldn't seem normal for "Silent Wave". Also
this is the first AF-S Nikkor I've had so don't know if it's typical.

    Grateful for any comments.

No, it's certainly not normal for AF-S lenses. I've got 3 of them and
none of them make that kind of noise - in use they are totally silent.

But then again, it's a Nikon lens and with their quality control
recently, anything's possible. And if you're planning on having it
repaired, look forward to Nikon taking bloody weeks to fix it, too :-((

Thanks - I'll speak to the dealer. Wondering if it's due to being too
long in a hot car boot during the summer and the lubrication has been
affected. Hopefully I'll get it replaced...

    whining noise

My 17-35 sometimes makes this whining noise as well. Otherwise it works perfect. I bought it second hand but it's still on seller's warranty. I don't know whether I should bother sending it back...
