Nikon 885 too bright outdoors

I've just bought a second hand Nikon 885, and I'm very impressed so far
apart from one minor niggle - when I take a photo outside, it seems
grossly overexposed - if that's the right word - I'm an amateur and don't
know my terminology!. What I mean is the photo is virtually totally white,
with hardly any detail in the shot at all. The on screen preview looks
fine, and if I use movie mode it's OK, but on Auto mode and
in every setting I've tried on CSM mode the actual pic is far too bright.

I've tried resetting the camera to the factory defaults through the setup
option, but it doesn't make a difference. Low light and indoor shots are
fine, it's just well lit shots that are far too bright.

Is there a simple setting somewhere that I've missed, or have I bought a
duff camera? It's not a major issue as the cam is mostly for nightclub
pics anyway, but it'd be nice to be able to use it for outdoor shots too.

    Thanks
