I found the following in the Nikon 950 owner's manual

    Focus modes:
    continuous autofocus (color LCD monitor
on), single autofocus (color LCD monitor off
or single autofocus selected from M-REC
setup menu), manual (ten steps from 10 cm/
    3.9?-?)

    Second to the last is:
"single autofocus selected from M-REC setup menu"

.... and this is nowhere to be found in the M-REC setup
menu ... I would to do focusing this way so the camera
is not continuously focusing on it's own as I carry it
about looking for shots, anyone know what I can do?
    or am I confused?

Suggest you look at P36 of the manual (at least in PDF):

By default, the LCD monitor comes on when the camera is turned
on and can only be turned off by pressing the MONITOR button.
While the LCD monitor is on, the camera adjusts focus continuously,
providing a constant preview of the view through the lens.
The settings in the LCD ON/OFF menu allow you to change the
behavior of the monitor and autofocus in M-REC mode, saving
power and increasing battery life. They also give you control over
whether the camera displays the photographs in the LCD
    monitor immediately after shooting.

The LCD monitor remains on when the
mode dial is turned to M-REC. Focus is
    only adjusted when the shutter-release
    button is half-pressed.
    ON&S-AF
    (monitor on,
    single autofocus)

Found it and made it work, thanks! I've had this thing since
1999 and never found that. I think it is a poorly designed
    manual.

All Nikon manuals seem that way. I've found the PDF copies at least allow
    you to search through them.
