Nikon Coolpix 990 - max CF card size.

Firstly, an apology to anyone who was about to respond to my (hastily
cancelled) typo-ridden post asking this very same question about a Coolpix
995 (which I have never owned). It's been a long day, and my fingers got
well ahead of my ageing brain.

I am currently using a 128MB CF card in my 990, but will soon be buying a
larger capacity card for my new D100. I would prefer to have maximum
flexibility of CF card use, so that I might swap cards between D100 and 990
if/when I want. (Please don't ask me why I would want to - I just think it
could be handy some time :)).

Does anyone have personal experience of using cards larger than 128 MB with
a Coolpix 990, and if so - what is the limit?

    TIA Tim S.

I've looked at the Nikon site, and they say 196MB max. SanDisk say the
same, but claim to have tested with 512MB (just their own brand, of
    course). I've just bought a 1GB for my soon-to-arrive 10D, but am
resigned to not using it in the 990.

Swapping cards between cameras can cause problems. I took my 128MB
Kingston out of my Nikon when testing a couple of Canon cameras. I
reformatted it in the Canon compact, but could not read it in the Nikon,
or transfer files to PC, until I had reformatted it in the 990 (losing
all my Canon pix - as I had no reader!). Also, you may find some folder
and image numbering issues unless you re-format each time.

I believe there is a difference in the file format between older and
newer cameras - the newer ones use FAT32 to allow for large capacity
cards, so clearly this will not work on your 990 unless you re-format.

More hassle than it's worth, IMV.

I am using a 256 M compact flash card in my CP990 and don't seem to have any
problems as yet. I don't use the same card for the D10 as I do for the 990
so can't comment on that. I have never taken enough pictures with the 990 to
fill up the card though. Maybe there will be a problem if I try to fill it
up. I have no idea what the maximum limit might be.

Is the camera indicating maximum capacity? In fine hi-res JPEG mode your
camera should indicate 162 or 163 image capacity when the card is empty.
In practice you would probably get in excess of 200. If it shows less
than 162 then it is not working the way it should.

    Alan,
That is a good point, but I think I would only be using one of my
(yet-to-be-purchased) D100 cards in the 990 on rare occasions, so perhaps
the need to reformat would not be all that onerous.

Since Wes is clearly able to use a 256 MB card in his 990 (even if it is not
being used to its full capacity ?), then I now intend to buy a 256 MB card
for the D100 for the moment. Then after I see whether I really need any
more capacity, I can buy another 256 MB or 512 MB at some time in the future
when the prices have dropped even further.

    Thankyou both for your help.

I may just be talking to myself, but I have just done a test which may be of
    interest to others.

After a long period of indecision, I actually bought a 512 MB Sandisk Ultra
    CF Card for my D100.
I have formatted the new card in my Coolpix 990, and the 990 appears to
    recognize its full capacity.

Thus with an empty 64 mB card, at 'Full' size and 'Fine' quality, the 990
    shows 40 shots available.
With the 512 MB card (at the same settings) it shows 325.
