Yes, it is a nice feature. I was surprised at how little time it
took to become accustomed to using the AE-L/AF-L button. Having to
use the shutter button to pre-focus gives up a lot. Would pressing
the D700's AE-L/AF-L button while focusing (using the AF-ON button
instead of the shutter button) as described on page 78 help? The
manual says that this will lock both the focus and exposure. If I
understand what you're trying to accomplish, the D700 would benefit
from having a feature from my Fuji S9600. When a selector switch
places the S9600 in manual focus mode, pressing a button in the
center of the switch causes the camera to focus and then immediately
    revert to manual focus mode.

  2. Had to have been me. It's all over the net, so it must be possible.

  3. Yes and no. Yes on your intent, no on "D90" (which should arrive in a
day or two). I got my instructions from a respected third-party book on
the D60, which is the camera I was talking about (see above).

Oops, I didn't try AE-L/AF-L, I use the AF-ON to focus. I leave it in
    continuous.
I need to sit down & study this. Another nice setting I did to the D200
was set it so the AE-lock button (AE-L/AF-L) locks it into manual
exposure mode with a press & release: you can adjust aperture/shutter or
not & it'll stick till you turn off the camera. Great for starting with
a test shot, check the histogram & adjust. Exposure compensation can be
infuriating with the 'smart' matrix metering it keeps outsmarting me so
it's cleaner to just go into manual mode once an initial guess is made.

There are a lot of options for what all the buttons do... way more than
I need but... those two are useful. I set them once & get on with
learning to make adjustments fluidly that way.

I use the function button in front for quick non-cpu lens setting while
scrolling the wheel. While previewing, the center of the big dial button
thing brings up a histogram, there are more options I haven't explored.

    Um...I've got the opposite prob.

On my camera (USA) both a and b say 1.00, however, I just looked at a display model at Sam's and it said 1.00 and 1.01. Is there an upgrade, if there is I can't find it.
