I am considering buying the Nikon D80

does anyone know if the nx software comes with it or do I need to fork
    out another 100 quid?

Can I use any other software to access and adjust raw images

I assume I don't need it for downloading jpeg images

    thanks

any other comments would be most welcome

my short list is Nikon D40X, Canon 400D and the favourite at the moment
    is the Nikon D80

  2. It comes with a demo version of NX, which expires after a month or so.
There are a whole bunch of other programs that can understand D80 NEF
files and do adjustments of various sorts.

As you say, no special software is needed for downloading JPGs.

Sure - I use ufraw to access and do initial processing on raw images.
You don't need any software to download images.

    Thank you for the response

do you know the names of any such free/cheap software that will work
    with NEF files.

i am about to blow all my cash on the camera and lens.

    Thanks again

  5. ufraw/dcraw is free and has a good reputation. I've never used it
myself, but a lot of people on this group think highly of it. What sort
of computer are you going to be using? ufraw is available for just about
anything, but a lot of software is Windows-only.

If you are a student or affiliated with a university, you can get a lot
of the commercial software at considerable discounts. Two that I know of
are Adobe's Lightroom which I think is $100US, and Apple's Aperture is a
bit more. I imagine they have similar discount programs in the UK, but
    that's just a guess.

    Explain please.
I use Capture NX to batch save photo shoots to jpg, bulk change WB,
    sharpening etc.
I have no problem performing a host of functions in batch mode...set
    it and forget it
What is it that you are trying to do in batch but can't do in Capture
    NX?

    Thanks
