Has anyone else noticed that if you use the AF illumination from the
speedlight it is not as good as using the camera's built in light?

Can you give more details? I spent a long time sorting out a
problem with my F80/SB50-DX. The solution was simple -
underexposures are prevented by using TTL for indoor flash.
But pinning down the problem took a while... ! The more
    specific the details, the better.

When you use the Auto focus in dim light with the camera alone the light
comes on to assist the AF but when the SB80DX is on it uses the red light
on the flash and it not as effective as the one on the camera.

Just had a thought you can turn the AF illumination off on the flash, so
I wonder if then the camera light works instead. I will try that now.

PS as you can probably tell I only got this flash yesterday.

    TIA
