What's the deal with the USA make Nikon cameras. Are you telling me that
Nikon USA will not service a NIKON camera if it is not a USA model !. Where
do you send it for service - out of the country?. How do you tell if a Nikon
D1 if a "USA model" or not. Is there a certain group of serial numbers to
look for?. Any help would be appreciated.

Not quite. Nikon USA will service Nikon equipment bought through
authorized channels anywhere in the world. If you fly to Tokyo, walk
into Yodobashi Camera there, and buy a Nikon F80s camera body there --
a model that Nikon USA does not import at all -- and then it breaks
after you get back to the USA, Nikon USA will fix it.
If you bought it from an unauthorized dealer, then you and/or the
dealer dealer take full responsibility for any after-sale service.

Not totally true with digital products:

    Digital Products

Nikon Digital Equipments are covered by Local Warranty from your country
of purchase. This is Nikon Corporation's Policy

    http://www.nikon.com.sg/TechSupp/warranty\policy\warrantypolicy.HTM

Film has an International Warranty tho. I wonder why the USA site has
    nothing on warranties tho!

FYI - The Nikon F80 is exactly the same as the Nikon N80. The N80 is
marketted in the USA and the F80 is marketted everywhere else.

    I said F80s, not F80.

  7. Scott> The warranty is valid only from the importer so if you want to
Scott> get it serviced under warranty it needs to go back to Nikon
Scott> Japan. Nikon USA will service any nikon purchased from any
Scott> Nikon dealer world wide but you will be charged for it.

Unless the situation has changed in the past few years, I think your
statement is incorrect. Before my visit to Tokyo, I called Nikon USA
    and asked them explicitly:

If I go to Tokyo, buy a Nikon F80S there (a model for which
there is no corresponding N equivalent), and need service
after I return home, will Nikon USA repair it under warranty?

    Their answer was unequivocal:

If you bought it in person from an authorized dealer anywhere
in the world, and you have the paperwork to prove it, we will
provide warranty service for it, even if it is a model we do
not import. If needed, we will special-order repair parts
    from Japan.

If you think I'm mistaken, you're welcome to call them and ask them yourself.
