Nikon's Capture NX needs a kick in the butt

Wonderful of Nikon to give the Capture NX software with the first thousands
of D3 and D300 camera's for free (what it should have been in the first
place!), but what gift is it?
True, it can make some very nice modifications to NEF files and even JPG and
TIF. The true drawback is it's unbelievable lack of speed, or better: if
Photoshop is an airplane, Capture NX is a snail in winter...
If I didn't get it for free, I would certainly never have bought it.

Despite the very nice features, it's virtually useless for any pro, because
to do some serious editting on say 30 pictures, would cost you one day at
least. Unforgivable for a company that makes fast shooting camera's, but
tries to sell software that only works with the crappy and buggy, unstable
    Micro$haft Framework.
This would be the same as some years ago trying to sell a program that was
    working under BASIC.

They should take the good working parts and build a new stand alone program
with at least the same speed as Photoshop. Maybe they should take it away
from Nik software, because this company clearly doesn't have a clue what is
needed in a digital photographer's software.

Dispite the fact they tell you at their sites, they will contact you within
the next business day, they never do. Just an automated answer.

It wouldn't hurt them to listen to their current and future customers...

    I have to agree.

There is much to like about NX but it is simply too slow to use.

I dropped it for Lightroom which grows on me more each day.

Before you give up, make sure your computer has enough memory. Photo editors
are, by nature, memory hogs, and the Windows paging algorithm has never had a
very good reputation. Adding another GB of memory may solve your problem.

No, brandnew mobo can't hold more than 2 GB. P4, 3 Ghz runing at 3.6,
Harddisk is a RAID sys of two WD caviar SATA disks. Just about anything else
goes fast, including video editing programs. It's definitely Framework that
    slows everything down.

Just as long as you are not using it on Leopard. Nikon says that NX is
incompatible with Leopard and might corrupt files when saving them.
They are working on a fix.

I am using Leopard....fix has been out for a week or two.....And the
files are corrupted in a very very particular sequence of events....but
anyway, the fix is already released.
