NY Times On The End of Film and The End of the Megapixel Race

Discussion in '35mm Cameras' started by Jeremy, Feb 2, 2006.

  1. My point is that our system is heavily socialized already....

Well, if he became rich by working hard, and saving, and investing wisely,
then why do you think it's allright to steal his money away from him and
give it to those who didn't, and couldn't and aren't? - And why don't you
let your father give his money to those whom he thinks deserve it, instead
of having the government steal it from him to give it to a lot of people who
had the same opportunities as your father did to work, and save, and invest
and become as wealthy as he did? - For God's sake, man.....Identify
yourself with the rich, and not with the poor. The rich are the ones who
start businesses, and hire people, and create wealth for the rest. They are
    where it's at.

A better question is why doesn't he buy his own health care? He buys his own
food, doesn't he? - And without food, he would starve to death. If the state
doesn't buy his food, theb why should they buy his health care? He can eat
what he wants. Maybe he likes to live on caviar and anchovies.....He doesn't
mine having continuous heartburn......But that's OK. That's his choice. If
the state bought his food, he would have to eat potatoes and hamburger meat,
because that's what's cheap, and the government wouldn't be caught dead
buying anchovies and caviar....And the same thing is true about health care.
When the giovernment buys it, you get cheap. If you work and earn lots of
money and invest it wisely and become rich, then you can buy the best health
care you want....The top heart doctor in the Mayo clinic. And why shouldn't
you? You earned it. If that's the way you want to spend your money, then why
not? Why should you give your money to the government so they can, "choose"
your health care for you? Why would anyone want to give up their freedom of
choice, and have to accept what some dumb government official says is, "good
    for them"?

For God's sake, man.....Identify yourself with the rich, and not with the
poor. The rich are the ones who
I identify myself as a citizen of Ireland, a citizen equal to every other
citizen. Your kind of divided group mentality, does not sync very well with
    my idea of patriotism.

  3. I guess not. An undivided group is an ant colony. I am not an ant. I am a
group of one. One individual who has his own wants and desires, and who
decides how he wants to spend his money to satisfy those desires. I
certainly do not want some government official deciding what I should be
spending my money on, just because he got a good deal on a million of them
at some discount store. If that's the way you want to live, then be my
guest, but just don't insist that I live that way.

I guess not. An undivided group is an ant colony. I am not an ant. I am a
Like I said, the "everyman for himself" system, where nobody cares about
anything only the size of the pocketbook and how much insipid consumerism
    one can engage in.

  5. But when I look around, I only see a computer, my four horns, and my Nikon
kit. I have no other hobbies, and I eat simply enough. I only want to eat
what I like, and wear the clothes I like, and live in the house I like. I
don't want to steal anything from anyone else, or tell them what to eat or
wear, or where to live. I certainly don't want to kill them for not
believing in what I believe. Why is this, "stupid consumerism"? I worked and
saved and invested my whole life, just so I could have a comfortable
retirement, doing the things I like to do. Why does some bastard half way
around the earth want to kill me, even though he has never even met me? And
what is more important, why are you surprised that I want to kill him for
attacking me? What do you expect me to do? Why are you surprised when I like
my president for throwing his/our weight around and sending in the
marines? - I have been paying those marines their salaries my whole life,
just in case I needed them. Now I do. And, I am happy that my president
agrees with my feelings on this matter. History proves that every so often
we have to crack a few heads, just to keep our self respect. This decade is
head cracking time. What's so surprising about that?

Nobody wants to kill you, drag yourself away from Fox News and go out and
get some fresh air. You sound like a lunatic shut in.

  7. Well, those weren't toy airplanes that ran into the WTC towers on
9/11/01......Someone sure wanted to kill us then. I think, in the long run,
Kewfi, it's you that has your head in the clouds. The hard cold facts are
evident there in that pile of rubble in NYC. I think I will go with what I
saw on the TV that morning........

The first computer I owned had a 40 MEG hard-drive & that was pushing
    the bleeding edge.

OTOH, first one I ever used didn't even have a hard drive; and only had
    16K of core (i.e. memory).

Ran across an interesting quote today:

Paul Delaroche in 1839 upon seeing a Daguerreotype, "from this time on,
    painting is dead!"

Don't figure those who crow about the demise of film today are any more
perspicacious than Mssr. Delaroche turned out to have been.

That's what the right-wingers have tried make it mean.

It's real meaning is somewhat more in line with the "age of
enlightenment" and the ideals of Jeferson, Adams, Henry, Madison,
    Franklin, et al.

    Communism wasn't even communism.

No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American
    people.

A couple things that do happen though. The availability of a "dole" is
linked to rates of unemployment, i.e. assistance is extended longer
during periods of recession, when fewer jobs area available no matter
    how dilligently you're seeking.

And the availability of basic services like medical care aren't tied to
your job. If you lose your job, you don't lose access to health care.

  14. Not everyone who says it's dead is crowing, but I believe they are wrong
as well; film will outlive everyone on this NG at least as of precisely
    6:43:00 PM on Tuesday, February 7, 2006.

  16. Just like the US soldiers like to kill innocent people all around the
    world?

Why would a government send people half way around the world to kill
    innocent people?

Terrorists can be dismissed as a small group of lunatics that is a
statistical likelyhood with so many people on earth.

Governments using their armies to invade other countries are a completely
    different matter.

  17. Documentation, please......

Right. "OK, you guys, we are moving out tomorrow, to go to XXXX and kill
those innocent people. So get a good nights sleep...."

Right. Just a small group of those being trained and armed and taught they
they will get favors in Heaven for innocent Americans killed here on
    earth.....

How about using their armies to get the operators of the training camps
    above?

  18. That bomb that was dropped recently in a village in Pakistan.
Of course there will be a different political spin. But a lot of things
that are happening in Afghanistan and Irak are exactly that.

Civilians are innocent until they are convicted by a civil court.

And there are no soldiers in that area either because it is not the
official armies of Afghanistan and Irak that are the problem.
Well, some people are different. US citizens are quite capable of killing
each other (including the use of bombs) without resorting to favors in
    Heaven.
There is absolutely no evidence that there were such training camps in Irak.
    Yet Irak was invaded anyhow.

  19. What bomb? - Was it dropped intentionally? If so, what was our motive for
    dropping it?
You know, a dozen terrorists didn't learn to fly 747's, and accidentally
hijack four of them, and accidentally fly them into US office buildings.....
This was a directed, purposeful attack against civilian targets.....There is
no comparison between this and an accident. A Navy jet plane dropped a bomb
on downtown San Francisco some 40 years ago.....I was in the building that
was right in front of it when it landed on Market street. I heard the
"thock!" when it hit the pavement, and a few seconds later, the "crack" when
the piece of pavement that it dug out, took the cornice off of the building
behind me. Fortunately, it wasn't "activated" or "armed" or whatever they do
when they actually drop this particular bomb on purpose, so it didn't go
off........But shit happens, and it isn't the same as a planned attack
against civilians. - We don't do that.....
