Odd behaviour of the Canon 5D Mark II

    Hi all!

I'm puzzled at my 5D Mark II behaviour from time to time and I'm not sure
what causes it. I only hope it's a setting and not the camera (it does this
from time to time since I got it in mid December). I'm not sure in what
circumstance it does it. All I know is I can't duplicate it when I want.

Sometimes, I aim at the subject and with button halfway pressed, I hear and
see that focus is "ON", but if I want to re-focus (because I focussed on
something too light or too dark), it doesn't seem to "catch", in other words
it won't focus again. It takes forever to get it going again.

ALSO I'm not sure if it's necessarily in conjunction with the above, but
sometimes, I shoot a photo and instead of showing on the LCD for 4 sec. as
set, it only shows very briefly and disappears.

A similar phenomenon to the above also happens if I want to review the
latest photos and erase one. I press the review button, the latest photo
appears and disappears as fast or appears and when I press the erase button,
    it disappears...

The only thing I've tried lately (and it hasn't done it since, but I've
taken few pictures), I set the "C FN III - autofocus drive" at *focus
    search off*

I've read my instruction book so often it's half torn (true). I'm waiting
for the "Lantern series" to come out because it explains all the settings
much better. However, it's only due at the beginning of May.

    Any idea? Thanks,

You are right. Your assumption is right on.
I must be somehow inadvertently pressing some control... but which one?

Why would the DoF button do this?
By the way, I did try this and EXACTLY the same symptoms show: as soon as,
and as long as I touch the DoF, the camera won't focus and if I shoot, the
image doesn't show. If I let go the button, it shows and if I press it
    again, it disappears.
Thanks a million! I think this must be it!
    Best regards, Marcel

    Thanks Richard!
Surely it could be, but I'm hoping as David suggested, I might have pressed
the Dof button unintentionally. As a matter of fact, I have to revisit the
function of this button, the existence of which I had completely forgotton
These days, there are so many buttons... one can presse the wrong one, not
    knowing it.
Here's a tidbit. When I first bought my Honda Accord, sometimes I would find
ALL the windows ½ an inch lowered when I got back to the car. I mentioned it
to Honda, but they couldn't understand why. One day, I did the usual as I
approached the car: I pressed the "open" key twice to unlock all doors,
leaving my finger on the key a little longer the second time. The windows
all opened. It's only then that I realised that pressing longer the second
time would open all windows, a nice thing for when it's hot outside... not
    if you're not careful ;-)
