on the subject of comparing digital to medium format. i am a hobbyist that
shoots 90% landscapes, with most of my prints done 20 x 24 and an occasional
30 x 40. i am a sharpness freak, btw. i dont have the money to spend on a
    canon 1D plus lenses. last year i sold all of my 6 x 9 and 4 x 5 equipment,
so it will be all different equipment for me anyway. please give me your
suggestions for a camera that would serve me well for less than $2000, and
used is definitely ok. i am headed to hawaii and would love to use it there.

So let me get this right, you're used to 30X40 prints from 4X5 and want a
digital to replace that for under $2000? Sounds more like you need a fuji
    6X9 rangefinder to me..

Remember, in your post you said "best you can buy digital print." $2000
doesn't get you the best you can buy, more on the order of $10,000 and up
will. The Canon 1Ds mkII mentioned in the article is about $8000, the
Mamiya ZD I mentioned runs about $10,000, body only, and the 32mp Hassy back
even more than that. $2000 will get you a 20D with a 28-135 IS or 17-85 IS
lens, which will get you very nice 16x20s, but if you push it to 30x40, you
may be disappointed. You may be able to find a used Canon 1Ds (11mp, not
mkII) for that price, but it's unlikely, I'm looking at one for $5000, and
used digital backs for MF are still up in that range and more.

Or something like a 1D/10D/20D, stitching software, a fast PC and a lot
    of organisation and patience.

Well, it should have nice glass and a nice body and case, anyway... ;-)
