    Dunno, really. Likely the same...

Not if you move to mirrorless: same image quality, can mount just about any lens
on them. I've even got MF lenses mounted in my m4/3!

Canon warranty is worldwide. Nikon warranty doesn't cover bodies, but as
much as Nikon Aus doesn't like people to know it, it does cover lenses..
If anyone has any issues with this, feel free to contact Nikon Japan and
explain the circumstances - they'll happily contact the local Nikon agent
    and intervene on your behalf.

As to whether boycotts makes any difference - my experience with Nikon was
that expressing displeasure to the Mother Company well and truly *can* make
a difference. Maxwell were failing to support Nikon product recalls by not
putting recall info on the web and also alluding to lenses not being
warrantied - the parent company were less than impressed by this :)

    Interesting info, thanks for that!
Indeed. They weren't very impressed either when Maxwell refused to sell me a
special focusing screen for my F6, years ago. Apparently and according to the
local "support", it was not a current camera, Nikon "only sold dslrs". This was
a few years ago. Let's just say I got my screen pronto after a couple of emails
    to Japan!

  4. How much better is the F6 over the F5?

Was it ever sold in Oz?

  5. They used to have an international warranty decades ago. I should check before I
    buy though.

  6. It's nothing to do with heat, well not much anyway. The expiry dates are fairly
accurate. After that, it's pot luck unless you refrigerate them.

  7. Any idea why it doesn't cover bodies?

I remember when Mal 'Memphis Pants' Fraser visited Nikon in Japan, on a tour in
the '70s, they gave him a camera. I wonder what sort of warranty it had. ;-)
    That's rather naughty of them.

  8. I have an F2 I was very happy with. I really wanted an F1 though because the
viewfinder showed more of the image. Don't recall the details now but with the
F1 you could see very close to 100% of what would be on the film. The F2 was a
little less. I remember joking at the time that the viewed image would get
smaller and smaller with newer models. ;-)

For me, night and day better. Mostly because:
1- It is a LOT lighter than the F5.
    2- Comes with a built-in motor-drive that doesn't need a trailer to carry
3- The metering is heaps better than the F5's, with full matrix colour-aware
metering, full older Ai/AiS lens compatibility, as well as a superb spot meter.
4- The standard vanilla camera imprints shooting data in between frames as well
as keeping it in memory - which I can dump as a "csv" file and use with exinfo
or similar program in the PC for my scanned images. And it keeps exif info for
    even Ai (non-CPU) lenses!
5- Fully compatible with ALL flash systems Nikon has ever put out, including the
    latest dslr-era ones.
6- Electronically controlled and configurable from a menu system with a screen
in the back. Essentially, it's a D2 with a film sensor.
7- The frame counter although electronic lets me wind back a film mid-roll,
shoot another, then come back to the frame I stopped at before and continue
shooting. I can also manually wind back to any frame in a roll, double-expose
it and go back to the end again. Only the original F could do that before.

It is indeed a jewel of a camera, even by today's standards. Only wish I had
bought two bodies way back then, when they were going for peanuts because of the
digital craze. Nowadays the price has recovered and bargains are a lot harder...
"ever"??? It *is* sold in Oz, brand new, now!
Vanbar has it in stock, plus a few other places.
    So is the FM10!

Aye, agree to a certain extent. Still, I must say film expired up to 5 years
has never caused me a problem. Mostly because I scan and I can correct small
casts at scan time. If I was using an enlarger, life would be a LOT harder...

not sure, meh - Nikon's choice to eliminate potential buyers from their
    market..

My gripe was they were laying crap on vendors in Oz who were selling
'greymarket' cameras, wrongly alluding to Nikon not supporting any
    warranties whatsoever

  12. The FM10 looks like a student's camera which Nikon will keep for many
    years to come.

Had a look at the illustration of the F6 on Nikon Australia web site,
where exactly is the drive mechanism?

Yeah, I agree. It works and meters with all the older lenses, which is excellent
    for students.
Inbuilt in the camera. Just like the F100's. But it also has a rewind crank,
unlike the F100. Which is handy to reposition film halfway through.
Wikipedia has a good description and Ken Rockwell's site has a detailed and
reliable review of it, although you gotta ignore the usual nonsense in his
    writing style.
You can get it new from HK on ebay for around $1500, which is a much better
price than the insane $2500 here in Oz. And sometimes it shows up here second
    hand for around that price.

  16. My experiences with this was all with B&W film. I never tried with colour
although I still have a stock of old Kodachrome and Ektachome film. These all
expired in the 80s, so it's probably not even worthwhile bothering with (nobody
processes Kodachrome any more anyway) but the Ilford B&W films tended to fog
    quite quickly.
