I am having a problem reading larger XD cards. Olympus will update the
firmware for free but I would rather not send it. Does anyone know how to
    do this?

I rather doubt that you will find the necessary firmware update unless you
have a very obliging local dealer.

Firmware updates these days are downloaded from the Internet site of the
    maker.

The camera is connected via USB with your computer while a software update
    programme is run.

Sometimes there are manual instructions to be followed e.g. "start the
    camera's menu and goto..."

Most recent models are easier than older models.

I suggest you go with Olympus for the update if that's what you really want.

Personally I'd be looking at updating the camera only this time I would make
sure that I bought as many features I thought I needed.

Last camera I bought (nearly two years ago) cost so much it "hurt". But I
am satisfied enough to still have the same camera.
