    Hi all,

I trust this isn't out of order in this forum. If so, any suggestions a to
where I could post would be appreciated.

I have an HP S20 scanner that I bought new about five years ago for approx
$1200. About 18 months ago it stopped working - the PC won't detect the
scanner when I plug it into the USB port. I have tried different ports,
cords, and PC's all withou any joy so I figure there is a problem with the
USB port on the scanner iself. I have opened it up and had a look but can
    see nothing obvious wrong.

HP don't seem to have any service agents, the only number listed for service
is HP themselves. I have called them on a couple of occassions in a vain
attempt to get HP to repair the thing, but despite my protestations all
they want to do is sell me a new flatbed scanner with a slide and filmstrip
adapter. Quite apart from the dubious quality that could be expected from a
flatbed scanner, I fail to see why I should throw away $1200.

Any advice/suggestions would be much appreciated. I'm in Melbourne BTW.

    Many Thanks.

    [apologies for top posting]

Welcome to the world of modern electronics. I'm afraid that HP is right.
It is simply not cost effective to repair consumer electronic items like
your S20 once they are out of warranty. In fact, during the warranty period
HP would have replaced your scanner with another unit rather than undertake
a component or board level repair. You are better off following their
advice and getting a new scanner.

If you are using Windows XP, make sure that you have the latest updated
    drivers and software installed.

I had an S20 installed that worked okay under Win 9x but the computer
couldn't even see it under Win XP.

The required downloads were available from the HP site but if you can't find
    it let me know.

Thanks. I had actually downloaded the updated software, but even with that
installed it wouldn't see the device, which led me to the conclusion there
was a problem with the scanner. Anyway, there's a guy where I work that
dabbles in these sorts of things and he's having a look at for me, so we'll
so how he goes I guess.
