I understand its a great camera, but I still reckon $399 is too much for a
2mp camera, even with an image stabilized 12X zoom lens. I am looking at the
Canon 1S which I can get for about $770. Sure this is almost double, but
    it...

    1. Uses cheaper CF1 and CF2 vs the SD Media
    2. Have an awesome 640*480 30 FPS movie mode vs the 320*240 10FPS
    3. Is 3mp (which is still a little low) vs the 2mp

I must agrgee though, the quality of the lens on the Panaonic is
    unbelieveable though!!!

The FZ2 was more of an impulse buy. I was actually thinking about the FZ10
(far too big) or waiting for a 4MP version of the S1 when all of a sudden I
    saw the FZ2 ad.

With the S1, some people have commented about the EVF freezing during
focussing. I've used the Pro1 and I found it to be so annoying that I
decided not to buy it. Definately try out the S1 first before buying it.

Also make sure you examine the images from the S1 (see all the review
sites). I've noticed that Canon's 3MP cameras tend to produce soft images (I
also own an A70). The FZ2, and indeed all Panasonics, seems to be able to
produce very detailed images compared to other cameras with the same pixel
count. This is probably due to their Venus LSI demosaic algorithms which
they claim improves diagonal resolution by 50%.

640x480 30FPS... really cool but takes up a lot of space!

IMHO, the best thing about the S1 is that it has ALL the manual controls
you'd want. Having taken thousands of photos on the A70, the biggest problem
I've found with the FZ2 is the lack of manual exposure and manual focus.

They display only 33% of the available photosites from a CCD ...

.... but only the REAL ones???

Actually, after seeing that add, I bought the FZ-2 for my father-in-law,
    for $399.
That's a good deal seeing he NEVER prints larger than A4. Yes the
Canon S1 IS is a much superior camera (the lenses from the two are
probably similar quality wise), but it is also a lot more money.
That's actually a lot of camera for only $399.
I have the FZ-10 and it's interesting to compare the FZ-2. I'll keep
testing before I hand it on to my father-in-law!!!!!! The lens on the
FZ-10 is subtantially bigger, obviously because of the larger CCD
    size.

On the subject of flash memory:

On price alone, there is not much difference between CF and SD.
    e.g.
Approx, compared to CF, SD/MMC is about 8% more, xD is about 30% more
and Sony MS is about 50% more.

The main advantage of CF has always been the extra storage available.
e.g the largest is around 8Gbytes.

I have never seen prices of digital cameras go up. I am pretty sure that next
Wednesday the price will actually drop by $50.

I'm quite surprised they would go to so much trouble with the lens then not
let you focus manually...still, you can focus using central AF sensor, hold
    focus then recompose right?

Well, its Wednesday and the camera is still $399.

I still think this is expensive when you consider its only 2mp and you can
get now. Like I said, I think the Canon S1 at $770 is better value.

Dont forget the S1 takes CFII which is dirt cheap! You can get 4GB in CFII.
When you look at the Muvo II for US$199 which has a 4gb CFII card in it,
    there is no comparison!
