Is this regarded as a good unit for £500?

It certainly seems a good camcorder, being given a '9' rating on the
CNET site. The only criticisms found in the reviews is the short-travel
zoom control, and the poor low-light performance. Not criticised in the
reviews, but something I would pick up on is the absence of a 3.5mm
external mic jack. You can use an external mic, but only via the
proprietary accessory shoe - which means you're locked into an expensive
proprietary Panasonic external mic. Another issue if I were buying one
is the 'non-standard' filter thread of 43mm - most camcorders seem to
have either 30mm or 37mm and with the Panasonic NVGS250B you're likely
to have to pay premium prices for Panasonic filters/lens attachments.
The last thing I picked up on is that the webcam facility is limited to
Motion JPEG at 320 x 240 and approx. 6fps; the fixed low frame rate
might be an issue and IME 12fps is better.

I've Googled and found the lowest price is £564 - so if you can get one
for £500 then I'd be inclined to go for it.

Personally if I were looking at a 3CCD camcorder, it's webcam capability
would be right at the bottom of my list!

Shame it doesn't do true widescreen.
