I am sure some of you have heard, there is a company, Acacia Research,
that claims to have a patent on downloading and streaming video. This
company is starting lawsuits against websites using videos. See the
link below if you would like to read more about it.

Currently they are only going after Adult websites. But with a few
wins in court, what will stop them from going after mainstream
companies? If they win in court now, it will be tougher to beat them
    later.

You might think there patent is weak, but they are playing it smart.
By going after adult companies first, Acacia knows that mainstreams
websites and companies will not help because they do not want to be
associated with the adult industry. They get some wins, and go after
mainstream companies after that with those past wins as evidence in
    there cases.

Not only are they claiming streaming video in there patent, but just
downloading video (they are claiming) is in there patent.

Large corporations like Microsoft, Apple, etc... that give you the
ability to stream videos or embed videos are at risk. Not just at
risk of a potential lawsuit by Acacia against them..but lawsuits by
companies being sued by Acacia, since these companies give you the
ability to use video on the internet.

It might be tough associating yourself with the adult industry. But
if this company is able to win in court now, it could change the
internet in a huge way. Please help the fight against this company.

    Thank you for your time.

  2. A judge who would fall for this should be immediatly discharged...
Clearly there is a huge difference between the two. Downloading video
is the same like downloading data. And that has been around even from
    before Acacia was erected.

Me thinks that the adult-industry doesn't want to kick up a lot of
dust, but a big company like MS or whoever has the highest stakes,
will probably simply that shitty little dwarf company out, and
everything will be forgotten and it's business as usual.

Actually I should correct my statement. The patent is on LZW compression,
which is a instrumental component of GIF. It isn't on the GIF file format.
So if in fact anyone claimed they had a patent on the file format then my
correction of your statement is wrong. However I don't recall that issue
    ever being raised.

Aint nothing that hasnt happened before. Just another case of patent
abuse. I wonder how I could patent the process of sueing people for
    patent infringement?

Actually, If I recall reading right, they won mainly because noone
else bothered to show up in court.
