Pentax Canada finally say lens will ship in April 2009, but not likely
anyone will buy this lens, as they have priced it at $1,900 CAD. Looks like
Hoya/Pentax don't want people buying anything from Pentax, as prices are
rising April 1st anywhere from 20% toas much as 100%.

Major price increases across the board.

Most major currencies have depreciated heavily against the yen, so
significant price rises are to be expected.

With Pentax, it is also the case that the company is hoping to sustain
profits even if it is at the expense of a lower market share.

The design team doesn't set the price you know.

Raising pricese in a recession is not the key to success though.

Apparently, DSLR sales are still strong. Pentax (and Nikon and Canon)
apparently rationalized that they would lose more money by absorbing
the Yen's value increase and holding prices than by sales lost as a
    result of price increases.
Pity for us, we'll see how it plays out for them.
P.S. Why don't we hang all forex traders? They really serve no
purpose. Let currency value rise and fall based solely on a country's
    balance sheet.

Was not commenting on the price. Was commenting that this is a crop sensor
lens, it is not the future, it is the past at any price.

They (Pentax) should have re-issued their Pentax SMC-FA* 80-200mm f/2.8 [IF]

In Canadian funds, dealer *may* sell for less, but with the replacement
    items having a higher price..

To offer a crop sensor lens at a huge price to a very limited set of buyers
is a very stupid decision by Pentax.

I don't know. Nikon did two releases of its rangefinders (copied
after models from the 1940s) in 2000 and 2005 and sold about 8,000 of
them at huge prices. Maybe there is a profit to be made in small
    releases at high prices?

Pentax has been titilating everyone with "news" of the upcoming 645D and
they can't even get a FF camera out there, there is only crop sensor lenses
on their roadmap, they have lost their way thats for sure. I personally
refuse to buy any crop sensor lenses from any manufacturer.
