I can't seem to find much on the Pentax Espio 24EW. How does it
    compare, optically, to:
    -- Yashica T4 Zoom
    -- Rollei Prego Zoom 90

    Thanks,

    Greg

    Hi Smartass Jones,

What would we do without helpful, informative people like you to
dispense your vast knowledge on this newsgroup?

This may be difficult for you to understand, Jones, but there is more
than one Pentax Espio model. I asked specifically about the Espio
    *24EW*, not just any Espio.

    Try this link:

    http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q="Pentax+Espio+24EW"

I get 25 hits with that link. I've read them all, and none are
especially informative about the 24EW's optical quality relative to
the Yashica T4 Zoom and the Rollei Prego Zoom 90.

Can anyone here -- anyone here who can read, that is -- direct me to
any reviews of the Pentax Espio 24EW?

Jones, your reply was about as worthwhile as spam. Don't you have
anything better to do with your time?

    Thanks,

    Greg

    ....

I never found one either, so I just bought it on past experience with
a Pentax IQZ 115. For a walk around P&S, no prints over 4x6 so far,
I am very satisfied. As always, YMMV.

    Best Regards.

You are right and I apologize.
Some days the worst comes out in me.

My post of the google links were in a helpful way though.
I just didn't know there were so many models.
    Good luck finding some reviews.

But what do you think about the sharpness, colour and contrast of the Pentax
    lens?

So far, the sharpness appears very good, to me, up to the 5x7 prints
    I've tried.

I see the color effect of the lens as neutral.

    IMHO, the contrast is excellent.

Under some conditions, at the widest focal length setting, I get
noticeable light fall off in the corners. (I also find that the light
fall off effect is less apparent with Kodak Perfect Touch prints
versus the ones I get at the Target 1 Hour. Same negative, requesting
a reprint.) I do not find it as noticeable as that of my Olympus XA.
    As always, YMMV.

    Best Regards.

Has Popular Photography reviewed the Pentax 24EW yet? I don't have a
subscription, but look at copies in the library from time to time.

Reading between the lines of Popular Photography's T4*Zoom review,
it seems that the passive autofocus isn't totally reliable, so although
the lens is excellent, sometimes the results are out-of-focus.

  10. Bill,

Unless I missed it, I don't think Pop. Photog. has reviewed the Pentax 24EW.
P&S reviews are few and far between in the mags. these days. There are some
user comments on the 24EW here (use the search feature):
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/compact-cameras/messages

I've read lots of comments, pro and con, about the T4* Zoom's AF, but have no
    personal experience with it.

    ....
I thought there was a one page short review on it. I don't recall the
issue, and I'm sure I've tossed my copy.
I think that is an individual view point. From my position, I am
always amazed that auto focus works at all.

    Best Regards.

FWIW, I think POP does around eight or so a year.

OTOH, last time I checked they don't publish all of their reviews on
the internet sight. I believe all of the issues can be accessed
through the inter-library loan system, possibly with a fee.

    Best Regards.

  13. I found a short uncomplimentary short review at the UK Amazon.com. In
my own experience last summer on vacation in the American southwest, I
found the 24ew to be a tack-sharp, excellently focusing camera. A
great joy to use. The only fly in the ointment, was its inability to
focus macro of flowers in extreme sunlight. At home, in cloudy and
murky conditions outdoors; it focused in macro quite well. So unless,
you're avid for flowe macros, I highly endorse this camera.

I guess I should add I don't like the 9 language, map fold out, excuse

When the sun clears I will try some macro flower shots with mine and
see if I have the same problem at our higher latitude..

The 24EW has seven zone, or user selected spot, passive auto focus.
