they had better pull something interesting out of their hat..... they
are in danger of marginalising themselves from the big-boys!

It seems most people think they have.
Has most of the features of all the main 10MP cameras at a cheaper price.

Lacks 5 fps shooting and a metal body.
New SSM long fast lenses not due to Christmas or next year.

Those seem to be the main weaknesses

Which ones have 5fps? Continuous streaming 3fps till you fill your card is
pretty reasonable, excellent SR (IS/VR) in body, weather sealed. If you
seriously must have big fast lenses then you will not be well served though,
most amateurs will not be too bothered by that though as the sticker shock
from any of the manufacturers will see to that.

Nikon D200 has 5fps. But then it isn't trying to compete below the price
point of the Sony, which is where I hear they are planning to aim if for
    $1600 with Sigma kit lens

Bloody Kennedys, I will be getting mine with no stinking Sigma lenses,
already have 16-45mm F4.0 ED AL to put on it or a 18-55mm Pentax, might try
one of the supperzooms for when I don't want to carry and change lenses,
perhaps one of the 18-125mm's, I hear they are not too bad.

It will be interesting to watch price drops of the various company cameras.
With sony entering the market and now with pentax's new release the cat is
among the pigeons. Nothing like some good healthy competition. Never looked
    better for prospective buyers.

Several months ago I would have expected that the K10D could be in the
AU$2,500 range, AU$1,500 or less is just awesome.

The new Nikon D80 looks at being about that as well. (If Maxwells have
enough money to buy stock so they can be sold in Australia.

    Are Maxwells in trouble?

Industry rumor (very strong) has it that they will shortly have there
product range taken over by other Australian companies.

  13. Figures I've seen for the D80 indicate it will be about $2k for body
only and about $2.2 with either an 18-125 or 18-200. Not sure yet what
the exact focal length will be, and if that will be a tamron or nikon
lens - maxwells can't seem to be able to confirm.
There are some very strong rumours that maxwells won't be supplying at
all and that it will be another distributor who brings them in.
Apparently kennedy's have been approached, but declined because their
loyalties lay in pentax. Very interesting times we live in!

Not so good for Nikon then unless the company that takes over Nikon Aust
does the import and support bit well.

If that is the case they may find it hard to compete with the
K10D/A100/350D/400D, these are very attractive packages for many consumers
with better pricing and if the Pentax lives up to the hype it is a killer..

Think of a company that's associated with Casio.

On Ted's Cameras web site in Australia the nikon D80 is listed for $1650
(body only), $1999.95 for D80 body with 18-135mm lens. I believe that when
the new pentax K10D (barring any faults in their camera) that this will
force the nikon D80 prices down. I have recently read on several overseas
sites that later this year pentax is also releasing a 12MP DSLR to take on
the higher end of the market. Great to see the giants getting some
competition and stop the exorbitant prices. I have taken many slides and for
this purpose have a nikon F5 and a much less priced pentax MZ6. For quality
of exposure and accuracy my pentax MZ6 (which cost me much less than my F5)
blows the nikon F5 out of the water. Currently I shoot with the nikon D70
(mostly landscape and night photography) and have already had it sent away
twice for the blinking green light of death and was without a digital camera
for some months. So I really hope that pentax is going to kicks some arse. I
for one, will hold of purchasing until the new pentax arrives.

    Cheers

That sounds about right as the US price for the D200 (BH etc) is
$1600USD compared to (rrp $2900 AUD) here which sells street $2600AUD.
And the US are advertising the D80 at $1000USD.

I have taken many slides and for
If the F5 ain't good then the F100 is a lot worse -having both - my F5
is accurate under all lighting situations.

Currently I shoot with the nikon D70
There have been a few problems with the D70 - noted this is another
    which I hadn't heard of.

So I really hope that pentax is going to kicks some arse. I

The below quote was from a poster at www.dpreview.com from and aussie:

"I just had a chat to the staff at my local Camera House and they tell me
the RRP of the K10D here in OZ is $1499 with the Sigma kit lens. Sounds good
as this aligns pretty well with international prices. Apparently the K10D
will be in their October catalogue with "call for price" on it due to
printing deadlines. The bad news - I was told that the camera isn't expected
here until 10th November... although anything could happen between now and
then. I'm guessing they will take quite a few orders in October... "

    Cheers
