Phone camera v 'Proper' camera - NEWBIE Question

Discussion in 'Digital Cameras' started by BertieBigBollox, Feb 12, 2007.

  1. For taking basic snapshots to be printed out in 4x6 or 5x7 how good
are the latest mobile phone cameras (which are up to 3Meg)???

Are they comparable with a 3Meg standalone digital camera? Or is there
a reason why a camera with the same resolution capability will still
    be better?

I've never seen a cell phone camera larger than 2 MP. I had a digital
camera by Olympus that was a 3.1 MP and it took better pictures than
my Sony T7 at 5.1 MP.

We're talking apple and oranges. The quality of my cell phone camera
wouldn't make the quality against my sony T7 especially if you are
thinking about blowing it up to 5x7. It's good for email.

I've seen cell phone camera's with a flash but I don't know how good
    those are either.

I stop taking serious picture with my Sony T7 and got a Canon 5D. No
more problems with any size pictures and quality.

  3. Yeh. The Sony Ericsson K800i has got a 3.2MP camera and flash etc.
Theres also about 4 or 5 others that now have >3MP...

And it has 16X zoom -- perfect for folks that don't know the diff between
    digital zoom and real zoom.

But, what about the optical quality of the lens?

And, what is the size of the sensor?

Someday, I'll probably own a camera that can make phone calls and websurf (and
control the TV and open the garage door), but I don't think it will come from
    a phone company.

For taking basic snapshots to be printed out in 4x6 or 5x7 how good

Anything 1.3MP and above will make a 'reasonable' 4x6. You WILL be able to
tell the difference if you take the same shot with a proper camera though.

Why? The typical camera phone is limited by having a very small, fixed-focus
and fixed aperture lens. All that can change is the shutter speed. And a
very small lens means a very small sensor, which is never good for quality.

A real camera can take in more light, focus accurately, choose an
appropriate aperture and has a better, bigger sensor.

    But if you're not critical...
