Heya, guys... after being asked about photography for the /n/th time by
friends and family I decided to write up a simple beginner how-to on
the matter, and I'd love feedback and suggestions about it.

However... you all might be more interested in the toys I put together
    in flash:

    http://beej.us/guide/bgp/toys.html

One of them is a little Depth Of Field demo that shows off the
interplay between DOF and hyperfocal distance, and focal length,
    subject distance, and f-number.

The other is a little simulation of how Av and Tv modes work, and what
happens in each when you muck with ISO, shutter speed, and f-number.

Like I said, it'd be great to get some photographer feedback if you
felt so-inclined. Just click on the navbar on the left of the page to
browse the rest of the tutorial stuff.

(Still on my todo list is to add more sample photos.)

That's interesting. I don't understand how the hyperfocal distance can
be behind the DOF though... hmm, yeah OK I get it, that means there is
no focus to infinity & the background blurs.

If you wanted to take this another step add the choice of format size
from a little P&S, 35mm, APS dSLR medium format & view camera, then tilt
& shift dials for the view camera! And a sunset slider for low light
    conditions heh heh.

Here's another similar tool that deals with blur characteristics:
