    Some of my best and kindest friends are the one's I left behind when I
    had to return to the USA from training in Munich. Even these many
    years later, I still miss many of them. But just as I was leaving,
    THE WALL separating East Germany from West Germany was coming down,
    and there was social unrest about the burden on those in the west
    supporting those in the eastern sector. There was trouble trying to
    assimilate such a huge new population.

    I don't know how things turned out. I've been away from that
    beautiful country for so long now. Everywhere you looked, it was
    clean, and scenic. I took a lot of photos in Germany.

    Off-topic (beef jerky) :)

    Markus, my recipe for beef jerky is real simple. I generally use a flank
    steak, just one, it's easy so no need to store mass quantities. This is
    an inexpensive cut and generally kind of tough so it's normally
    marinated and broiled quickly but for jerky it's simple to cut across
    the grain with a kitchen knife. Thickness doesn't matter much but as
    thin as you can easily manage. I mix about a quarter cup of mostly
    paprika with some garlic salt and a bit of hot cayenne chili powder in a
    bowl with a spoon to sprinkle it on. While cutting the meat, I stack it
    in layers with the powder. No need to wait as it spends some hours
    marinating while drying. Then hang them on the oven rack with a foil
    covered cookie sheet to catch drips & put the oven on 'warm' or even a
    pilot light may be enough for about 4 to 8 hours till it's no longer
    chewy and has a crumbly dry texture. YUM!

    Hey, that´s some serious "high speed off the shelf" jerky recipe, you
    definitely don´t want to wait long for your chew, eh? LOL Maybe i should try
    it, I must admit i take a more complicated approach with all the marinade
    ingredients, but the result is worth it IMHO... and one steak ... hey, that
    would last only a few minutes in my family... that´s why i always make 12
    pounds of beef at once... then i have some peace and quiet for a few months

    The dry seasoning makes it fast.
    If I make more, I just eat it all anyways: the soft crumbly texture
    doesn't slow you down like the chewy stuff. Flank steaks are about a
    pound and you can't fit more than a couple in the oven anyways once it's
    sliced & hung on the rack: maybe three if you had a huge cookie sheet.

    Life, I was refused service in a store because I am white American.
    It seems there is a radical *element* in every country. But you knew
    that already, or should have.

    Generally speaking, it is a wonderful place to visit. There are worse
    places to be, but you knew that already, or should have.
