    I'm trying to apply a fade-in fade-out image overlay to a video i'm
editing. With Premiere I understand the way to do it is to place the
image file in the Video2 slot on the timeline then drag something
called The Opacity Rubberband which adjusts the fade-in fade-out
    effect.

Seemed straight forward, but having set this up, when I preview as the
timeline plays across the image file, all that happens is a small black
cross set against a white square appears in the top left of the preview
screen and the image doesnt fade at all.

I thought I'd followed the instructions to the letter but it wont work.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or refer me to a step by step
    guide that I can follow.

    Thanks

It's been a while since I used 6.5, but I think that you need to render
the effect, that's what the cross is referring to. Render the work area
and it should then be visible.

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean by 'render'. How do I do that?

Press the enter key. Really, this is elementary stuff which can be found
in the manual. Not that I don't want to help, but you're missing out on a
lot if you don't know the basics.
