My first digicamera arrived this week. A Minolta Dimage S414 and I
    love it.

    However...

The included batteries lasted for three pictures...

So while I was charging up my rechargeable (NiMH) I popped in four
standard AA "Energiser" batteries from the supermarket (normally one
of the best of their kind).

Today the camera tells me they're kaput as well ! after four more
    pictures !

I haven't switched on the camera except for taking the picture, I
spent about a minute or two at the most browsing the menus - total.

    Is this normal ?

  2. This is normal. A digicam kills most energizer/alkaline type of
cells with 2-10 pictures, and the powerconsumption more or
less shortcuts the batteries. Rechargeable is able to sustain the
    current.
    With non-rechargeable - yes.
