    Hi,
I've been away from this newsgroup for awhile, so I wanted to ask a
question. I have a Coolpix 4500, and just wondered if people are having
problems with the "Command Dial" (as they call it) or the "Multi
    Selector Button" breaking?

The reason I ask, is because the command dial on my wife's 950 doesn't
work any more. The same is true on a 990 that we use at work. I remember
hearing about people having the same problem on this newsgroup.

Anyway, have they fixed this with the 4500, or are people seeing the
same problems? I've been lucky so far...

    Thanks!

  2. A drop of switch cleaner, externally applied, may sort the problem....
    Sorry, I don't know.

Yes, that happened to my dial on the 990. It would work in auto, but not in
manual. That was my reason for stepping up to a different camera. Someone
suggested using an aerosol switch cleaner, just a dab on the outside and let
    it work it's way in.

Supposedly improved on the 4500. As David said, a bit of tuner cleaner
judiciously applied can work wonders. Been there, done that on my 990 with
just over 10,000 pictures on it. If this is not enough tutorial used to be
on the web of the repair procedure illustrated on the 950.

    I have got a 995.
Beautiful. Still working very well. No problem with all the switches and
    dials.

Is there any particular brand of switch cleaner that is recommended, or
    is any generic brand OK?

I just used T & B Electrical Equipment Cleaner. And now all of a sudden my
    990 works! That's why I bought the D10, because my 990 didn't work!

Well, I guess we can still use the 990 for macro shots.

I had good results with Radio Shack's tuner cleaner.
