there are many different Contax camera's; some work without batteries,
    some don't.

batteries are small and carrying a spare isn't that much of a problem,
    in my opinion.

The RTSII offers mechanical shutter speeds of 1/50 and bulb.

    The S2 & S2b are fully mechanical.

The RTS and the RTS II (pretty sure but double check their specs on the web)
may work at one shutter speed plus bulb? w/o batteries. The Aria, the RTS III
and the N series autofocus cameras are battery dependent - they need to be
because they have built-in motordrives. The 139Q (was there a 137Q? I had the
137MD and 137MA) I believe may have had one of its shutter speeds as a fail
safe speed in case of battery failure, just like the RTS/RTS II. Their is also
an S2 or S2b that can go w/o batteries at all shutter speeds but its expensive,
but if you don't mind Yashica bodies (which can also take MF Contax lenses) the
FX2 is mechanical/manual shutter speeds w/o a battery, metal body, cheaper than
most (all?) Contaxes and has depth of field preview (rare on Yashica models).

Could you mean the FX-2000 Super (or something like that?)? I don't think it
has depth of field preview like the FX-2 and FR (I can't remember if the FR
needed batteries to work or not, I know it took batteries for its LED type
    meter display though).
