Question: why am I dropping about 40% frames with AVI_IO, but not with vdub or virtualvcr?

I am dropping about 40% of the frames that I capture with avi_io, but
when I use virtualvcr of virtualdub, I dont drop any(using the same
    settings)

    I have a P4 1800Mhz(512MB RDRAM) and a Winnov Videum 1000+

    the settings were as follows:
    Uncompressed 640x480 YUY2 @ 30fps, and huffyuv for initial
    compression.
(actually avi_io gives me this problem with almost any uncompressed
    format)

I prefer using avi_io for capturing because of its av sync and disk
spanning options, and I would like to continue to use it. I hope there
is a fix to this problem, or I am overlooking some setting or
    something.

please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.
