Recomendation for Good Digital Video Recorder

Discussion in 'Professional Video Production' started by Jordan Taylor, Sep 27, 2005.

  1. Hi I am looking to make a documentary for my senior project. I want to
buy a good camcorder that can produce commercial videos and movies. My
budget is around $3000.00 and I'm looking for something that I can
continue using in the future too. Does anyone have any recommendations?
I am particularly interested in ones that use Carl Zeiss glass if
    possible.

Stay well clear of The canon gm2 it has a very bad drive unit problem
that surfaces on a lot of units around 14-20 months and costs hundreds
to fix, canons answer is to carry on making it regardless and deny it
    has a problem.
The Gm1 is hopeless in low light, with it's "unusual" minimum shutter
of 50 it is only useable in strong light and well out of it's depth
    indoors under tungsten light
I would recomend a good second hand sony like a pd150 or pd170, they
are excellent in low light and lets face it, most situations are bad
light and they are well built and sturdy, unfortunatly they cost a
little more than some others, but you only get what you pay for.
The carl Zeiss glass a marketing ploy for novices.
try E.bay and use a high feedback seller

  3. Basically I am worried about the bokeh. Do you know of any good
camcorders with lenses that give good bokeh if not Carl Zeiss?
