I am a novice in video editing. All I need is cut out some pieces and
glue movie back together. The simplier the better. So far I only have
tried MovieMaker and Video Edit, and was not satisfied with codec
selection and time it takes to save edited movie.

Can anyone recommend me good software for movie edits?
Would it be able to do cuts from mpg files?

    Thank you.

I use Sony Vegas Video 3.0 (old version, no longer available) and also
Vegas Studio 2.0 (stripped down newer version with basic DVD authoring
included). Both are fine and handle MPG file inputs.

You may NEVER be satisfied with the amount of time it takes to render
video. I am using a 2.8 GHz HT P4 with 1 GB of RAM and it takes about
real-time to render video to DVD compatible MPG-2. Other formats can
be faster. Lots of transitions or effects slow it down also.

For cut and join of MPEG I use VideoReDo. They have a
free 30day trial. You can configure
the controls to match your needs.
