reencoded xvid won't append to original xvid

  1. I've generated 2 clips from the same xvid avi file using VirtualDub. I
made one with direct stream, the other by reencoding it, again into
xvid. When I try to append them VirtualDub says they're different
formats. I've looked at the 2 files using Gspot and they're identical
in every detail. The 4CC codes are identical (I even checked with a 4CC
changer from DivX just to make sure). I've looked at the file details
in VirtualDub and there are no differences between the 2, except of
course, in length and bitrates, as they are 2 different clips.

I suspect that the fault may lie in one of the many mind boggling
encoding options in the xvid configuration window (always inside
VirtualDub). Do any of these options set off some internal flag in the
file that I can't see with all those editing programs, but VirtualDub
can detect? If so, I could select that option and reencode a file that
is truly compatible with the direct stream file and then be able to
    append them.
