What would be the best approach for removing the backgrounds and replacing
backgrounds of photos of jewelry in order to post it to a web site?
    Thanks for any help

If your background is simple and contrasts with your subjects you could get
lucky with the Wand or with Selective Colors
If not, the pen tool is your best friend.
A bit hard to learn but very precise.

    You can try magnetic lasso.

if you're talking about complex patterns like chains and filigree, channel
    masking is the ticket
