Respectable quality Canon Autofocus zoom?

Discussion in 'Canon' started by Shankar Bhattacharyya, May 24, 2009.

  1. Among the Canon autofocus lenses available is there a non-L zoom which
covers the range from 80/100mm on the short end to 200mm or so on the
long end, with optical quality at least comparable to the original 80-
    200 f/4 FD?

At some point I intend to get either the EF 70-200 f/4 L, the 100-300
f/5.6 L or the 50-200 f/3.5-4.5 L. All seem generally feasible on the
used market. In the meanwhile I would like something halfway
    respectable.

I don't need an image stabilized lens and am considerably more
    interested in the optical quality.

I have not used Canons since the FD days and am finding it difficult to
feel enthusiastic about the EF-S lenses.

    Thank you for any advice.
