RIP camcorder - replacement?

Ouch. 8-year-old Sony trv240 now has no firewire interface (a known
problem with badly designed connectors, iirc??). Anyway, a quick phone
call to Sony quotes me a fixed price of over £170 to repair, which is
ludicrous. So, time for new camcorder I think.

Trouble is, I'm way out of touch with developments. Is something like
the Canon fs306 a reasonable replacement, without spending the earth? I
tend to take footage, keep for ages, then edit down to DVD. Any
recommendations for something for occasional domestic use? (Preferably
that doesn't use Li cells. They're a pain :-| And most certainly not Sony!!)

Any idea what the trv240 might be worth as spares for someone? It's in
perfect nick apart from the firewire problem - sickening it's not worth
    repairing.
