I have just bought a new hard-drive digital video camera (actual an SD
card camera rather than built-in disk).

My main reason for wanting such a camera is so I can simply drag and
drop the files on to my PC and save/view/upload them from there. I can
easily transfer the files on to PC either by USB or direct from the SD
card. They are in mp4 format, which open in Quicktime by default.

Unfortunately the videos don't play. They just start and then freeze
after a couple of seconds. Even using the 'Cyberlink' software that
came with the camera, it's just jerky and then freezes totally. I
wondered if it was because the files are too big or something - so
changed the quality setting on the camera right down from 'Super fine'
    to 'standard'. No difference.

Should I not be able to watch these videos back on my PC? Or am I
    doing something wrong?

Any help would be gratefully received.

......... I've noticed that the files being produced are big - perhaps
unsurprisingly for an HD camera - over 100mb for a clip of about 60-
seconds. I'm guessing might well be a factor. But even on the lowest
quality setting they are un-viewable on PC. All works fine through the
    TV by the way.

check out MP4CAMtoAVI a free program that can downconvert them for easier
editing. SONY Vegas 8 should be able to handle the files and probably Ulead
