When scanned why do my dads 40 year old slides look better than
professional photographer-taken negatives that are 2 weeks old?
(the negative scans are VERY grainy)

  2. That's just the way it is - life is like that sometimes. ;-)

Negatives give a huge exposure latitude compared to slide film, the
downside is more grain in the final image. While they both remained
analogue film and print images it was difficult to make a direct
comparison, now you can scan them onto a common digital media, generally
at much larger size than you would typically have produced prints too,
that comparison is possible and the difference is clear.
